Network Security Among Four Year Colleges Shymaine Coleman, MIS Student Dr. Dale D. Gust, Professor Business Information Systems Department Dr. John Pfeiffer, Professor Department of English Central Michigan University Mt. Pleasant, MI 48859 USA ABSTRACT Network Security is a growing concern for both worlds of business and education. Universities have kept a low profile about problems involving network security. Major publications have featured articles on network security at companies in recent months. Since hackers have been a problem for all types of companies with network systems, the focus of this paper was two-fold: to determine student perceptions relative to the university level of network security and hacker vulnerability as opposed to security levels identified by network security administrators at selected four-year colleges. A survey was administered to business students to solicit their perceptions of university network security and telephone interviews were conducted with network administrators at selected four-year colleges. The paper outlining the results of the study will be shared with participants along with recommendations for improving university network security systems.
